Before and After Photos tell a story

A photo point on the Spring Creek Ranch near Billings, Montana.
There is a loop made in the electric fence (no grazing allowed) called  "test rest" area.

Fenced off area from grazing 1988        Same spot, same wood post in foreground 2000
Note the dramatic reduction in Big Sagebrush, 12 years later.

  How did this happen?

Did they spray the brush?  Nope!

Answer - Planned Livestock Grazing & Good Pasture Management.
The tool of "Herd Effect" - concentrated high livestock density was planned.
The cow's hooves stepped on the Phase III - idle sagebrush plants and pushed the broken off organic matter into the soil - feeding the soils.

Results = Now there is a Phase II - healthy grassland community of native western wheatgrass.   See the soil profile differences.
