A Moveable Winter Garden Idea

WORLDWIDE PORTABLE FOOD test GARDEN

This above photo was taken November 17, 2008 outside from our Absarokee, Montana home with temperatures at night sometimes dipping to 17 degrees F.   So far, so good.  We will see if this ideas works when we go below zero!  There is now ice forming on the lid in the AM.

This contraption is a moveable 2’ by 4’ insulated garden box mounted on wheels with a hinged heavy thermo-plane glass covering. (see below photo)

There is a thermostat controlled soil heater in the bottom of this box and an automatic (non-electric) glass window opener that lifts up to 30 pounds.  When the sun comes out, the heat generated in the box warms the oil in a black painted tube and lifts the glass lid to let in cool air.

It’s fun to watch as a cloud passes by -  the lid automatically closes. The sun pops out again and the lid re-opens.

We do have snow to contend with.

So far the soils temperatures stay between 60 and 70 degrees F inside the box.  By the way, we are already eating out of this garden!
